WHO will clean the Gowanus Canal FLOOD of 2012 aftermath? Is it SAFE?

The City has just sent a new press release:

"October 31, 2012 – Due to flooding and power related shutdowns caused by Hurricane Sandy, wastewater treatment plants and pumping stations have discharged untreated wastewater into New York City waterways. The New York City Department of Health & Mental Hygiene advises that direct contact with the Hudson River, East River, New York Harbor, Jamaica Bay and the Kill Van Kull for recreational activities such as swimming, canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing or any other water activity that would entail possible direct contact with the water should be avoided until further notice." http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/pr2012/pr032-12.shtml

We here at CORD have been very worried about the public health and safety of our community regarding the considerable debris as well and spillage and leakage of the raging and super funded Gowanus Canal into our community.Common sense tell us this is not a safe nor sanitary condition.  So we are posing a few questions here:

Do we walk over it?
Jump over it?

Walk through it?
Can our kids walk through it?  Our puppies/dogs?

How do we clean our shoes?
Our baby carriage wheels?  Bicycle wheels?  Push cart wheels?
Do we grab a hose and clean it?
Should we touch the debris?
Should it go down the sewar?
Do we need hazmat suits?

These and other questions have been spilling into CORD as the waters of the notorious and highly contaminated Gowanus Canal finally recede.  See Link

http://carrollgardenspetition.blogspot.com/2012/10/horrific-flooding-of-gowanus-canal-last.html

WHO is going to clean up this mess?  HOW will this mess be cleaned up?  WHEN will it be celaned up?  WHAT will our City be doing to help us clean-up?

Unfortunately we here at CORD do not know the answers to these questions!

We urge you to contact our electeds and other city officials and ask these and your own questions and demand a PROPER ENVIRONMENTALLY SAFE CLEAN UP of the spilled over Gowanus Canal flood aftermath!

We hope our Electeds are listening!
Please help us contact them and demand some sensible answers.  Tell them what we already know:  Brooklyn is too GREAT a borough to tolerate such a massive health and safety risk running right through our sidewalks and backyards and stoops and over our children's shoes!

Recreational Water Advisory for Hudson River, East River, New York Harbor, Jamaica Bay and Kill Van Kull

October 31, 2012 – Due to flooding and power related shutdowns caused by Hurricane Sandy, wastewater treatment plants and pumping stations have discharged untreated wastewater into New York City waterways. The New York City Department of Health & Mental Hygiene advises that direct contact with the Hudson River, East River, New York Harbor, Jamaica Bay and the Kill Van Kull for recreational activities such as swimming, canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing or any other water activity that would entail possible direct contact with the water should be avoided until further notice.
The Department of Environmental Protection is responding to the impacts caused by Hurricane Sandy on its wastewater treatment facilities and will monitor water quality conditions through testing to verify when these water bodies are safe for recreational uses.

In addition, if you are concerned about this issue, please write to us and send us your pics of own disaster disaster.  We will post them with your name (if you wish) here on the CORD blog.  CORD can be reached at:  CGcord@gmail.com

CORD HISTORY:

With the "Protect Our Homes" petition, CORD was formed in May, 2007. This petition arose as an overwhelmingly negative response to the coming of the over-sized 360 Smith Street Development at the corner of Smith Street and Second Place (Aka Oliver House; aka 131 Second Place). This petition, which had well over three thousand signatures, led to a new zoning text amendment in summer of 2008.

To: Our Elected Officials, Community Leaders, The MTA:
(MAY, 2007)

We the undersigned Carroll Gardens homeowners and residents, are appalled by the "as of right" ruling which allows owners and developers to erect buildings in our neighborhood with no regard to the impact they will present to our quality of life and the value of our homes........
