URGENT MESSAGE PLEASE GET THE BLOOMBERG POLITICS OUT OF THE GOWANUS CANAL CLEANUP!!

URGENT MESSAGE

PLEASE GET THE BLOOMBERG POLITICS OUT

OF THE GOWANUS CANAL CLEANUP!!

**CALL THE FOLLOWING OFFICIALS BELOW

CORD has just received the flyer below.
WE NEED YOUR HELP.....The decision on whether or not to designate our Lavender Lake as a Superfund site is still pending.............

**CALL THE FOLLOWING OFFICIALS BELOW AND TELL THEM THAT YOU WANT EPA TO DESIGNATE THE GOWANUS CANAL A FEDERAL SUPERFUND SITE!!

CORD is still convinced, that the nomination of the Gowanus Canal to the National Priorities List as a Superfund site is the best thing that ever happened to our neighborhood.

We do not believe that the City of New York's "alternative" plan affords any tangible benefit to the community in terms of process, result or timeframe.

It is our understanding that the city’s plan is basically an attempt to provide the responsible parties (the polluters) with a deep discount by trying to have a good portion of the polluters’ tab picked up by a federal program known as WRDA. There is a waiting line for the very limited amount of available money and long, long list of projects that would be ahead of the Canal. And….did we mention?

THE GOWANUS CANAL IS NOT ELIGIBLE FOR WRDA FUNDS AT THIS TIME.

Where and what exactly is the benefit to the community in the City’s plan? We can’t find it.

The EPA through the SUPERFUND program, has the clout to collect the money from the responsible parties, has the expertise and a time improved program already in place to handle situations like our canal.

IT IS CRUNCH TIME....WE NEED TO MAKE OUR VOICES HEARD LOUD AND CLEAR.

CORD

**URGENT MESSAGE

PLEASE GET THE BLOOMBERG POLITICS OUT

OF THE GOWANUS CANAL CLEANUP!!

**CALL THE FOLLOWING OFFICIALS BELOW

PLACE THE GOWANUS CANAL ON THE NATIONAL PRIORITIES LIST

AND LET EPA GET STARTED DOING THE WORK

THAT NYC HAS NOT DONE FOR THE LAST 40 YEARS!!!

MAYOR BLOOMBERG SHOULD NOT BE TELLING THE RESIDENTS OF THIS COMMUNITY AND ELECTED OFFICIALS THAT THE CITY WILL DO THE JOB.

THE MAYOR HAS HAD EIGHT YEARS TO BEGIN ADDRESSING THE PROBLEM OF THE GOWANUS CANAL. YOU WOULD THINK HE WOULD WELCOME THE EPA CAVALRY RIDING IN WITH A PROMISE TO HELP HIS HONOR'S CONSTITUENTS.

INSTEAD, IT APPEARS AS THOUGH THE MOMENT THE EPA ARRIVED, MAYOR BLOOMBERG 'S TEAM WAS SUDDENLY SCRAMBLING FOR A WAY TO MAKE SURE THAT THE EPA WOULD NOT BE HELPING US AT ALL. IT SEEMS AS THOUGH THE ONLY IMPORTANT THING IS TO MAKE SURE THOSE RESPONSIBLE PARTIES WILL NOT HAVE TO BE FISCALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR MUCH OF ANYTHING AT ALL.

LET'S NOT ALLOW ANOTHER LAYER OF GOVERNMENT, THE INSERTION OF ADDITIONAL AGENCIES AND THE DESIRES OF THOSE WHO STAND TO BENEFIT THE MOST FINANCIALLY, FURTHER COMPLICATE THIS MAJOR CLEAN UP TASK.

LET'S TURN THIS JOB OVER TO THE ENVIRONMENTAL EXPERTS. THE EPA HAS NOTHING TO GAIN BY DESIGNATING OUR CANAL AS A SUPERFUND SITE.

THE RESIDENTS OF THIS COMMUNITY, BOTH PRESENT AND FUTURE, ARE THE ONES THAT STAND TO REAP THE LONG TERM BENEFITS OF THE COMPREHENSIVE CLEANUP A SUPERFUND SITE DESIGNATION OFFERS.

LET THIS SUPERFUND SITE CLEAN UP BEGIN.....NO OTHER PLAN, USE OR DREAM IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN GETTING THIS JOB DONE RIGHT.

CORD HISTORY:

With the "Protect Our Homes" petition, CORD was formed in May, 2007. This petition arose as an overwhelmingly negative response to the coming of the over-sized 360 Smith Street Development at the corner of Smith Street and Second Place (Aka Oliver House; aka 131 Second Place). This petition, which had well over three thousand signatures, led to a new zoning text amendment in summer of 2008.

To: Our Elected Officials, Community Leaders, The MTA:
(MAY, 2007)

We the undersigned Carroll Gardens homeowners and residents, are appalled by the "as of right" ruling which allows owners and developers to erect buildings in our neighborhood with no regard to the impact they will present to our quality of life and the value of our homes........
